Days of Wonder with Carolien Vos
I'm excited to be visiting my good friend Carolien, leaving Prague behind and heading out to her home that she shares with her husband and two children, about 60km out of town. Carolien's home is the true embodiment of her love for nature and her spirit to nurture harmony. Her spaces are divided for family and friends, yet another entire part of the estate is devoted to providing a retreat for families with challenging circumstances with their children.
Her philanthropic and charitable work has been continuing for many years. Importance in providing financial support for the organisation that she is patron of and a physical and hands-on approach to orphanages or learning organisation that work to improve so many families' lives. This approach is a testament to her nature and generosity to life. "I am trying to support as much as I can, especially the vulnerable children, focusing on education and wellbeing."
We wander around the gardens, and with great pride, she shows off her vegetable patch that thus far has produced delicious produce. Pumpkins and aubergines lined up to be picked and turned into rustic dishes. Alongside her patch, you can find chicken, roaming cats, and a very friendly donkey. All creating a contrast from the glass structure that serves as their home.
Inside, their home is modern, simple, filled with art and commissioned pieces that all tell a story and are cherished by the family. We discuss how art plays an essential role in everyday life. "Art is about emotion.”
To be surrounded by nature and beauty is a privilege that needs to be appreciated with every breath. And so, around the gardens and in the house, there are viewing spaces or benches that mark the time to sit and look beyond the horizon and be transported to a stillness of the mind.
Carolien’s philosophy on life: "Try to keep in mind that sometimes you win, and sometimes you learn. Doing things outside of my comfort zone can be very energising.”
